The Creepy-Crawly Side of Castle Rock Lake Life: Spiders on the Docks

Castle Rock Lake sunsets? Gorgeous.

Evening boat rides? Absolutely.

Pulling up to a dock after dark and realizing you have several eight-legged neighbors? Welcome to the less-photographed side of Wisconsin lake life. 😂

We recently pulled up to the docks at Dirty Turtle on Castle Rock Lake and couldn't help but notice the nighttime dock crew: spiders. Lots of spiders.

Before anyone starts blaming Dirty Turtle, this isn't a Dirty Turtle problem. It's a dock-and-water-at-night thing.

Docks, shoreline structures and lights near the water attract insects — and where there are insects, you're going to find spiders taking advantage of the buffet.

And really, can you blame them? Spiders don't carry wallets, and burgers and fries aren't free. 😂

So while we're grabbing dinner at Dirty Turtle, they're outside enjoying the complimentary all-you-can-eat bug buffet.

Honestly, everybody wins.

Well… everybody except the bugs. 🦟🕷️

If You're Afraid of Spiders...

Consider this your friendly Castle Rock Lake warning:

After dark, don't inspect the dock too closely.

Tie up the boat. Look straight ahead. Walk confidently. 😂

Of course, there is a positive side to our creepy little lake neighbors. Spiders are helping take care of mosquitoes, flies and plenty of the other insects we'd rather NOT have buzzing around us.

Basically, they're the unpaid nighttime pest-control crew of Castle Rock Lake.

And honestly, that's lake life.

It's beautiful sunsets, boating, fishing, swimming, waterfront restaurants and nights spent on the water — mixed with mosquitoes, mayflies, spiders and the occasional reminder that we're sharing the shoreline with a whole lot of Wisconsin wildlife.

We'll happily take the trade.
