If you're thinking about buying a lake home in Central Wisconsin, Castle Rock Lake and Lake Petenwell will probably both end up on your radar.
They're neighbors. Both are part of the Wisconsin River system. Both are surrounded by Juneau and Adams Counties. Both have hydroelectric dams and areas where Wisconsin River Power Company (WRPCO) owns the shoreline.
On paper, they have a lot in common.
Spend a day boating on each, though, and you'll quickly realize they don't FEEL the same.
And that's important.
When I'm helping someone look for a lake home, I don't think the question should simply be, “Which house do you like better?”
I want to know:
How do you actually want to use the lake?
Lake Petenwell: Big Water, More Space and a Slower Pace
At approximately 23,000 acres, Lake Petenwell is Wisconsin's second-largest inland lake.
And it feels BIG.
There are areas where you can look out across the water and really appreciate just how much open space surrounds you. Compared with Castle Rock, Petenwell generally has fewer places to pull up by boat for food or fuel and can feel considerably more secluded.
For some people, that's exactly the appeal.
This is how I often describe Petenwell to buyers:
Do you want a slower-paced lake where the kids can fall off the tube and you aren't immediately worried about another boat being right on top of you?
If your idea of lake life involves more open water, fewer boats around you and a little more breathing room, Petenwell may be your lake.
That same size can be intimidating for someone who isn't accustomed to navigating big water. Depending on where you are, you may also feel more isolated than you would on Castle Rock.
But for the person looking for space and a quieter lake experience?
That's not necessarily a drawback. That's the whole point.
Castle Rock Lake: More Social and More Places to Go
At approximately 13,000 acres, Castle Rock Lake is Wisconsin's fourth-largest inland lake.
It's still a very large recreational lake, but the experience is different.
Castle Rock tends to feel more connected and social. There are more opportunities to boat somewhere for food, drinks or fuel, and you'll generally see more activity around you.
In many areas, you can look across the water and see the opposite shoreline. You're also more likely to see other boats nearby.
My Castle Rock buyer is often the person who says:
“I want lake life AND people. I want to boat to lunch, stop somewhere for a drink, get fuel and see what's happening.”
If part of your dream is hopping in the boat without necessarily having a destination, finding somewhere to eat along the way and enjoying the social side of lake life, Castle Rock may fit you beautifully.
What Do Castle Rock and Petenwell Have in Common?
Despite their very different personalities, the two lakes share quite a bit.
Both are part of the Wisconsin River system, both are controlled by hydroelectric dams, and both have areas with WRPCO-owned frontage.
They also sit within the same beautiful part of Central Wisconsin, surrounded by Juneau and Adams Counties, making it entirely possible for buyers to consider properties around both lakes during the same home search.
Both offer four-season recreation, including boating, fishing, kayaking and other water sports during the warmer months, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy Wisconsin winters as well.
So...Castle Rock or Petenwell?
Here's my simplest explanation:
Petenwell = more space, quieter water and a slower pace.
Castle Rock = more activity, more stops and a more social lake experience.
Neither one is better.
They're simply different.
And that's why I encourage lake buyers to think beyond the house itself.
You can remodel a kitchen. You can replace flooring. You can build a garage.
You can't move the lake.
Before choosing your lake home, spend some time thinking about how you picture an ordinary Saturday on the water.
Do you picture wide-open water and room to spread out?
Or do you picture boating to lunch, seeing other people and having plenty of destinations?
That answer may tell you more about where you belong than the house ever will.
