One of the underrated perks of the Lake Petenwell area is just how much golf is nearby. You can choose from casual nine-hole courses, traditional 18-hole layouts and some of the best destination golf in Wisconsin.

Sand Valley | Nekoosa/Rome

The big name in the area and a destination all by itself. Sand Valley's sprawling Central Wisconsin property offers multiple courses and very different playing experiences, making it possible to build an entire golf getaway around one resort.

Sand Valley Golf Resort

Lake Arrowhead | Nekoosa/Rome

Lake Arrowhead gives you two 18-hole championship courses, The Pines and The Lakes. It's a fantastic option if you're staying around Rome or the east side of Lake Petenwell and want excellent golf without traveling far. (Wisconsin Rapids)

Lake Arrowhead Golf

Northern Bay Resort | Arkdale

One of the more unusual rounds in Central Wisconsin. The 18-hole Castle Course features replica holes inspired by famous courses, making this a fun choice for golfers who want something a little different.

Northern Bay Resort

Castle Rock Golf Course | New Lisbon

This 18-hole public course is just north of Mauston and right in the Castle Rock/Petenwell Lakes region. It has moderately rolling terrain, a driving range, two practice greens and options for both newer and experienced golfers. (Castle Rock Golf Course)

Trappers Turn Golf Club | Wisconsin Dells

Worth the drive toward the Dells. Trappers Turn offers 27 championship holes plus its 12North par-3 course, making it another place where you can spend considerably more than a couple of hours with the clubs.

Bullseye Golf Club | Wisconsin Rapids

This was one we were missing! Bullseye Golf Club is an 18-hole public course surrounded by mature pines in Wisconsin Rapids. The club also has a full driving range, putting green and short-game practice area. (Bullseye Golf Club)

The Ridges Golf Course | Wisconsin Rapids

Ridges Golf Course And Banquet Facility is another solid Wisconsin Rapids option. This public 18-hole course has two distinctly different nines: the front is more open, while the back begins along a ridge overlooking pines and Buena Vista Creek. (Wisconsin Rapids)

The Ridges Golf Course

TriCity Golf Course | Wisconsin Rapids

For something quicker and more casual, TriCity Golf Course is a public nine-hole course. It's a par 34 with narrow fairways and smaller greens, plus a driving range and putting green. (Wisconsin Rapids)

Homestead Golf Course | Wisconsin Rapids

Homestead Golf Course & Supper Club is another laid-back nine-hole option. The former family farm became a golf course in 1971 and today plays as a 2,712-yard par 34. (Wisconsin Rapids)

Wild Rock Golf Club | Wisconsin Dells

Another one I'd keep on the list for visitors willing to head south toward Wisconsin Dells. It's a good complement to Trappers Turn for someone turning a Petenwell trip into a full golf weekend.

Cold Water Canyon | Wisconsin Dells

Located at Chula Vista Resort, Cold Water Canyon gives visitors another 18-hole option in the Dells area and works nicely for families or groups combining golf with everything else Wisconsin Dells has to offer.

And that's the cool part...

You could stay around Lake Petenwell or Rome and play a completely different style of golf every day — Sand Valley one day, Lake Arrowhead the next, Northern Bay, then head north toward Wisconsin Rapids or south toward the Dells.

Fish in the morning. Golf in the afternoon. Dinner and drinks afterward. Repeat as necessary. 😂

Whether you're visiting Lake Petenwell for the weekend, looking for a vacation property or thinking about making the area home, don't forget the clubs.
